Abstract

Variations in cadmium and molybdenum content along two marine cores were used to reconstruct former oxygen abundance in subsuperficial water in Mejillones Bay (northern Chile), in a recent past. Particular hypoxic/anoxic conditions met at the bottom of this embayment, may have permitted Cd and Mo to be incorporated in the sediments, directly from the bottom water. In this way the variations of content of these two elements measured in the sedimentary columns deposited in the last 3000 years may reflect changes in the oxygenation conditions of the lower part of the water column. The laminated structure of the cores and the high concentration of Cd (mean 34 ppm) and of Mo (50 ppm) suggest that the oxygen content did remain very low in the course of the last 3000 years, and the fluctuation of the concentrations along the core its interpreted as changes of the oxygenation between hypoxic and anoxic condition. The general pattern seems to be an intensification of the hypoxic conditions toward anoxia in the recent time. The fact that the highest levels of Cd and Mo content are found in the darkest layers may be interpreted as a confirmation of intensified hypoxic/anoxic conditions. These conditions may have been linked to changes in the nearshore oceanic circulation and/or variations in the upwelling intensity.
