Abstract

This study reports data on the larval culture of the "puye", Galaxies maculatus (Jenyns), a small cold water fish occurring in the Southern Hemisphere. For this culture, recently enclosed larvae were placed into 500 liter tanks and fed first with rotifers, then with Artemia spp., and finally with prepared feed. Over the growth period of 150 days, several separations of the fishes were necessary based on size differentials. Results suggested this species would reach a commercial size of 4 to 6 cm in about six months using the intensive system proposed. The larvae of this fish responded well to the feeding sequence described, within the intensive culture system studied.
