Abstract

A 23-day-old girl was treated with intravenous calcium gluconate while being evaluated for persistent fever, soft tissue swelling, and erythema of the dorsal aspect of the right hand. A blood culture was positive, and osteomyelitis was considered likely. Plain radiographs revealed dense radiopaque material in the soft tissues, consistent with calcification. Ultrasonography showed echogenic areas and acoustic shadowing. Three-phase bone scintigraphy performed 1 week later showed normal perfusion and increased extraosseous uptake in the dorsum of the right hand on delayed images. No evidence of osteomyelitis was found during follow-up.
