Abstract

In the framework of a research project the efficiency of water use and application has been studied in a selected irrigation area of Central Chile (Rio Itata). The main objective of this cooperation was to study the actual irrigation efficiency at different levels of the irrigation system. Based on field tests at the Experimental Station of the Univ. of Concepción and studies of the irrigation system in the watershed of the Rio Ñuble, selected numerical models were applied. They are used to improve the structure of the irrigation system, to reduce the water losses of field application, and to analyse the development of irrigation area. The results of the project are supporting the University of Concepción consulting the farmers, thus improving the irrigation efficiency by controlled management.
