Abstract

In Spain, the Florida and Payoya breeds perform an important role in the dairy goat production based on extensive grazing. They have their respective associations, but lack judges for their morphological valorization. This evaluation cannot be performed without a previous morphological study, which is the objective of this work. Ten zoometric variables in 63 adult goats of the Florida breed and 578 of Payoya breed were controlled; the biological limits and variability for each parameter were calculated, the harmony of the morpho-structural models evaluated, and the degree of discrimination between both breeds estimated. In the Florida breed, there is minimal the degree of variation is presented, especially related to the corporal capacity and size. The Payoya breed has a more long-lineal conformation and there is more fluctuation in the variation of limits. Is possible to differentiate both breeds as regards to structure, principally for cephalic longitude (F=323.51; P<0.000001) and longitudinal diameter (F=179.62; P<0.000001). Discrimination analysis shows an effectiveness of 100% in Florida and 99.8% in Payoya for adscription in each breed. The analysis of principal components for 5 factors explain over 80% of the variation. There was a high level of correlation between variables in both races, and there does not seem to be a clear relation between variable types and principal components. Based on the results, and the fact that the genetic basis is well differentiated, a two level evaluation program is proposed. In conclusion it is possible to establish two different valoration models because there are differences in rump, thorax and perimeters evaluations in each breed.
