Abstract

The organization of transmission structures in Latin American countries, with emphasis on the institutional and operational arrangements adopted in each country is discussed. As the regional infrastructure in Latin America is developing, heavy investments in both generation and transmission investments are required. The network expansion planning problem is made even more complex in competitive environments, where the economic effect of a generator's siting decision is signaled indirectly through transmission tariffs. The possibility of organizing integrated regional markets is also discussed.
