Abstract

This paper adresses the application of wavelet transform for exploratory porpouses. Wavelet transform is suitable to explore trends, time-frecuency structures and asociations with related data. Two applications are presented: the use of wavelet to search trends in rainfall time series in Chile and the posibble association between rainfall time series and Sea Surface Temperatures at El Niño3.4 region using redundant wavelet, cross spectra and wavelet coherency. These techniques allow a process of exploratory data analysis, knowledge discovery and hypothesis construction rather than hypotesis testing. Also, further applications are discusse.
