Towards event-driven simulation of static sphere packings
Abstract
The inelastic hard sphere model has been widely used in the simulation of dilute granular systems. Nevertheless, the simulation of dense systems is very time consuming and other methods must be used. We extend the inelastic hard spheres model by adding static particles, in contrast to dynamic particles that move under the action of gravity. The addition of static particles together with simple rules to go from one state to another allows us to speed up the simulation of solid-like granular structures. We use this extension to simulate the deposition of particles over a fixed ground, obtaining configurations with almost the random close packing fraction. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.
