Abstract

SIMPLE is an optimized near IR echelle spectrograph for the E-ELT assisted by adaptive optics. It delivers a complete 0.84-2.5?m spectrum in one exposure with resolution up to R=130,000, nearly diffraction limited pixel scale and limiting magnitudes down to JHK?20. Its most prominent science cases include the study of the intergalactic medium in the early Universe (z>6) and of the atmospheres of exo-planet transiting nearby low mass stars. © 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.
