Abstract

Experimental results on scour at a circular pier in compacted cohesive and non-cohesive sediments under the clear-water condition are presented. Experiments were conducted at the Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory, University of Concepción, Chile. Three experimental series with different sediment mixtures, including cohesive and non-cohesive sediments are analysed. Restricted by the possible compaction range of a given sediment, 3 experiments were conducted for each serie. Experiments duration was 30 hours. After that time a quasi equilibrium state was reached. During the running experiments, scour-hole topography was measured with a non-intrusive, high-resolution, laser-based, scour measuring system.Velocity measurements at selected points in the flow field were performed with a Vectrino-ADV. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group.
