PROFESSOR MAURICIO AMSTER ON THE BASIS OF TYPOGRAPHY TEACHING IN CHILE

Osses R.

Abstract

Today typography teaching is present at all schools of design nationwide. Research, analysis, and debate approach this issue and it is included in most of the curricula for design studies. At various universities, the subject is practically the same. When analyzing the curricula for both private and state-run universities we note that contents, approaches and methodologies are quite similar It is worth wondering what the reason of this circumstance is, to search for the common fibers and untangle the roots that served as a base to restructure these learning models. Apparently, Mauricio Amster can answer this question and it is nothing but his own teaching. His book Tecnica grafica (Graphic Technique) published in 1954 is by itself a curriculum and the genetic relations with the present curricula used by typography professors are evidenced when analyzing and contrasting both approaches. This article is firstly drafted from the analysis of the book Tecnica grafica by Mauricio Amster and the assessment of some curricula and its contents. Thus, the book by Mauricio Amster is a proof of its importance on the basis of the typography teaching in Chile.
