National identity and regional identities in today's Chile: Complementarity or conflict?

Asun, R; Zúñiga C.

Abstract

The present work proposes to study the relation between group identification and intergroup discrimination processes, through the study of an idiosyncratic case, such as the relation between Chile's national and regional identities, from the Social Identity Theory perspective. A survey was applied to a sample of 918 university students belonging to four regions of the country, using a probabilistic sampling method. Results indicate that national and regional identities are the most important territorial identities for the participants and that both would configure inclusive identities, since those who develop higher levels of regional identity also tend to have the highest levels of national identification. Also it has been found that both identities would have equal or complementary meanings, in accordance with Schwartz's personal values model.
