Juan Garcia del Rio: a Colombian intellectual for the media of Both Americas

Ortiz de Zárate, Amalia; Browne, Rodrigo.

Abstract

In spite of being almost unknown, the Colombian intellectual Juan Garcia del Rio (1794-1856) carried out a wide variety of activities and research in Latin America. His admiration for Simon Bolivar made him go beyond his territorial limits and contribute to the construction of national-states as Peril, Chile and Colombia, directly collaborating with important figures as Andres Bello, Bernardo O'Higgins and Jose de San Martin. The significance and representation of this author allows us to live and feel great moments in the emancipating processes of the continent and the intellectuals belonging to the Latin-American culture of the XIX Century, contributing a critical reading to the political and social matters of our time.
