Electrochemical production of lead chromate and sodium hydroxide in a two-compartment cell
Abstract
This paper describes the application of an anode-support system (AS) and a cationic permselective membrane to the electrolytic prodn. of yellow lead chromate pigment and sodium hydroxide soln. in a two-compartment cell. The authors detd. that it is possible to use in the process an AISI-316 stainless steel or a titanium mesh basket loaded with lead granules. Under the operating conditions used both the AISI-316 stainless steel and the titanium remain passive and act only as elec. contact between the lead anodic pieces and the external current source. A Nafion 901 bimembrane is used to sep. both compartments. Good quality yellow lead chromate and sodium hydroxide soln. (50-150 g dm-3) are obtained, with a power requirement of 0.41 kWh (kg PbCrO4)-1.
