Abstract

The performance of silicon PIN diodes for use in X- and gamma-ray spectroscopy has been measured with a specially designed hybrid preamplifier. Our results show an ENC of 360 for a 10×10 mm2 photodiode. When the photodiode is coupled to a Csl(Tl) scintillator, we obtain 5.6% at FWHM for the 662 keV gamma ray of the 137Cs source. Theoretical as well as experimental considerations are suggested to improve the performance of these detectors.
