Migration and Displacement in Los Boys by Junot Diaz

Stecher L.; Vergara C

Abstract

This article analyzes how the migration is portrayed in Junot Diaz' Los Boys. It considers the differences between migrant and diasporic subject, proposed by Abril Trigo. In the context of the ongoing Caribbean migrations to the United States, we show how this series of short stories shape both in the Dominican Republic and in New York, the space (here / there) and time (now / then) dualities, the migration trip of the family, and rural and urban displacement. These stories expose dystopian spaces, which nullify the utopia of the American dream.
