LIFE IN A LANCE: FISHERMAN'S INDUSTRIAL WORK IN NORTHERN CHILE

Aguirre, C; Moya, MO

Abstract

This article explores the process of working on board a purse seine fishing unit, the most common form of industrial fishing on the coasts of Northern Chile. From an ethnographic study, it is described and analyzed how a fishing crew is shaped, the social relations that occur on board, the types of work and the risks to which the crew is subjected. It is shown how these individuals interpret their experiences on the job, seeing themselves as a community.
