Abstract

To compare hematologic and biochemical values of captive and wild Humboldt penguin, blood samples were obtained from 21 captive, and 21 wild Humboldt penguins. The hematological values studied were: packed cell volume (PCV), solids (TS), white blood cell (WBC) count, heterophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, monocytes and basophils. The following biochemical values were determined: alanine amino transferase (ALT), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), creatinkinase (CK) and uric acid. The values of WBC, lymphocytes, enzymes in ALP, GGT, LDH (P<0.05) were significantly higher in captive than wild birds and the eosinophils count and the body weight of birds were higher in wild birds.
