Fish exploitation associated to the artisanal fishing of Juan Fernandez lobster (Jasus frontalis)
Abstract
To contribute to the understanding of the exploitation of fish associated with the lobster fishery of Juan Fernandez, 157 fishing trips were monitored during the 2010-2011 season. The catch was conformed mainly by Juan Fernandez trevally (Pseudocaranx chilensis) (45%), morwong (Nemadactylus gayi) (41%), and lowfin moray (Gymnothorax porphyreus) (8%), from a total of 10,462 individuals caught, corresponding to 19 fish species, three of which accounted for 94% of the catch in numbers. The estimated total catch for the fleet were 40, 24 and 13 ton of morwong, Juan Fernandez trevally and lowfin moray, respectively. 97% of the catch was used as bait for fish or lobster.
