PSYCHOTHERAPIE AUS SUDAMERIKANISCHER SIGHT

Jimenez, JP

Abstract

Psychotherapy between cultures: A South American view. - The repercussions of globalization in the modern age have occasioned profound changes equally affecting cultures and individuals. The author contributes to reflection on the consequences of these changes by adopting a consciously Latin American approach that is explicitly critical of Eurocentrism. He applies this approach to the problem of the connections between collective/cultural and personal identities under these conditions. Personal and cultural identity are of course inextricably bound up with one another, but there are situations in which the differences between the two identities stand out. One such is migration. With recourse to his own clinical experience as a therapist for migrant clients, he calls for wider allegiance to an explicitly intercultural approach to psychotherapeutic treatment.
