Riches and routes. Southern Chile in the British scientific imperial eyes (1830-1870)

Llanos, C.; Gonzalez, JA

Abstract

The central problem of this paper is the relation established between the description of the Chilean territory made at the Royal Geographical Society of London and the global expansion of British imperial interests, particularly in the case of the recognition of the South Pacific territory between the 1830s and 1870s. To observe the expression of this problem, particular attention is given to the descriptions and studies related to coal, Chiloe Island and the routes across the Andes in southern Chile.
