Van der Waals - Like transition in fluidized granular matter

Abstract

A phase separation phenomenon in fluidized granular matter was studied. Molecular dynamics simulations of a grain system in two dimensions, with a vibrating wall and no gravity, exhibit appearance, coalescence, and disappearance of low density regions (bubbles). Rarefaction and densification density waves lead the bubble dynamics.
