The Mandrake in the Labyrinth: a baroja note on the reception of the theatre of Machiavelli in Spain

Abstract
In contrast to the reception of Machiavelli's political writings, the reading of his literary work in Spain was slow in coming and limited. Although Pio Baroja describes himself as an ignorant of the Italian culture, one of the first quotations of The Mandragola in Spanish literature can be found in his novel, The Labyrinth of the Sirens (1923). In this article I will analyse the characteristics of this reference.
