Fish exploitation associated to the artisanal fishing of Juan Fernándezlobster (Jasus frontalis) [Explotación de peces asociada a la pesquería artesanal de langosta de Juan Fernández (Jasus frontalis)]
Abstract
To contribute to the understanding of the exploitation of fish associated with the lobster fishery of Juan Fernandez, 157 fishing trips were monitored during the 2010-2011 season. The catch was conformed mainly by Juan Fernandez trevally (Pseudocaranx chilensis) (45%), morwong (Nemadactylus gayi) (41%), and lowfin moray (Gymnothorax porphyreus) (8%), from a total of 10,462 individuals caught, corresponding to 19 fish species, three of which accounted for 94% of the catch in numbers. The estimated total catch for the fleet were 40, 24 and 13 ton of morwong, Juan Fernandez trevally and lowfin moray, respectively. 97% of the catch was used as bait for fish or lobster.
