Abstract

The election of a Latin American pope immediately aroused the interest to know him and his thinking. His relationship with the Uruguayan thinker Methol Alberto Ferre was revealed since the beginning of his pontificate. In this article I intend to delve into such intellectual relationship, focusing on two key analysis for both entities: the Catholic Church and Latin America. I will explain the concepts of people, historicity and culture, as understood by both authors, applying them to the Church and Latin America. I will draw from the philosophy of history behind their thinking, as well as other critical assumptions about the meaning of history. I will conclude with an attempt to link the history of the Church and that of America, always bearing in mind the intuitions of Methol and Pope Francisco.
