Meiselman, Herbert

Keywords: behaviour, behavioural measures, emotion measurement, behavioural measurement methods

Abstract

This chapter discusses the subject of emotion measurement from a behavioural perspective. It analyses the external manifestations of those who experience a particular emotion, for example, facial gestures, body postures and voice tone and pitch. Particular behaviour manifestations are expressed based on specific emotions. Observers can identify the behaviour that accompanies the emotional experience and react accordingly. The chapter starts with a brief introduction of the behavioural aspects that are relevant to study emotions i.e. facial gestures, body postures and vocal expressions. Then an in-depth analysis of measurement methods that focus on behavioural aspects is carried out. The state of the art considers unimodal behaviour reactions and it concludes with multimodal approaches. The last section of the chapter discusses how the behavioural measurement of emotions can help designers develop new products with high emotional impact on people.
