Abstract

Like other developing countries, in Chile frequent extensions of existing housing are observed. To support this demand while self-generation of clean energy, which is encouraged with government subsidies and net metering laws, we propose it to build attics in existing housing with integrated solar panels. Which can provide new residential indoor space and collect energy to reduce home consumption and/or contribute to the urban grid. From urban solar potential map that we have developed on-line (msc.ubiobio.cl) for the city of Concepcion, Chile, geometric conditions, energy consumption patterns and magnitudes of solar collection on the roofs of the existing dwellings, are known. Using parametric modelling, with a multi-objective genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) and dynamic energy simulation, we can suggest an optimal design of solar attic for each single house according its shape and orientation that maximizes the radiation capture, the interior living space and minimize construction costs. The proposal considers its execution with industrialized wood components by digital manufacturing and hybrid solar (PV/T) collection system integrated in the best oriented gable. Based on case-studies we estimate the systems can provide more than five times of the electricity demand of and more than half of that required by hot water, and about a third of the heating demand, with a 20 to 30% additional living space. Considering the current dissemination of the solar map, an additional web-site is linked to proposed design of solar attics. In this way the user knows the potential of energy savings that their houses have, and also they can review a suggested extension with integrated solar collector system. These results are downloaded in a standard report, delivering a schematic design and an estimation of annual energy produced. Additionally a prototype has been installed in the city, to disseminate the idea to the citizens.
