How well are subalpine leaves, flowers and fruits represented as fossils?
Abstract
Fossil leaves and reproductive structure from lake sediments have been widely used to reconstruct past vegetation history, ecological processes and related climate conditions. However, many factors affect the relationships between plant macro-remains incorporated in lake sediments and their source vegetation. Taphonomic studies of surface sediment samples investigate the factors influencing modern distribution and deposition of plant remains, and hence which plant taxa will be more likely represented in lake sediments.
