Neural networks on galaxy pattern recognition

Abstract

Learning machine techniques have proved to be useful in classification. In this work we use neural networks for the morphological classification of galaxies. We consider several parameters, e.g. colour, brightness, and classify them into three general categories: spiral, elliptical and unknown. Our results show the capability of neural networks for reproducing the human task - up to a certain extent - of classifying astronomical objects.
