NEED TO CREATE SCALLOPS MARINE RESERVE IN THE RINCONADA BANK (ANTOFAGASTA-11 REGIÓN, CHILE)

Abstract

Anticipating the imminent collapse of the "Ostión del Norte" bank, in the Rinconada Bay (Antofagasta, Chile) which importance it be the unique with capacity to autorecuperate it; considering the consume completely that present other important banks in the country; adding the specials biological characteristics that present its population, such as: long reproductive period, higher genetic conditions respect to the other scallops populations studied in the country and the great efficiency of the adductor muscle. According to the above indicated thinking about the necessity to preserve this important bank, and in according to with the role that concern it in the Regional Development Plan, the University of Antofagasta have initiated the arrangement for to create according to the present Fisheries and Aquaculture General Act, a Marine Reserve of Scallops. The Marine Reserve purpose is to recuperate its stocks and transform it subsequently in a permanent seed supplier for to restocked other collapsed banks or send it to the Culture Center
