Expansion and Transformation of Agriculture in an Export Economy: The Transition to Agrarian Capitalism in Chile, 1850-1930
Abstract
That the expansion of Chilean export agriculture of between 1850 and 1930 constituted a process of transition to capitalism through the "landowner road". The main interpretations of Chilean agricultural development are discussed in this article, as well as the expansion of the agrarian frontier, the diffusion of mechanization, the organizational transformation of the hacienda system, and the proletarianization of rural workers as its direct consequence.
