Carbon Dioxide Electrochemical Reduction on Tin and Copper Electrodes

Abstract

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide has been proposed as a viable alternative to transform one of the most relevant greenhouse effect gases into useful chemicals. A wide variety of cathodes and electrolytes have been studied toward the transformation of carbon dioxide into low carbon fuels. The use of tin- and copper-based materials as cathodes toward the electrochemical reduction of CO2 is discussed in this article, focusing in the future challenges that must be faced in order to establish an economically viable scale carbon dioxide electrolyzer. General conclusions regarding majoritary products on each surface are made, and the impact of morphology in carbon dioxide reduction on copper electrodes is widely discussed in the present article.
