Abstract

Ethno-tourism has been studied from different perspectives. It has attracted the attention of scholars mainly owing to the possible benefits and negative effects it can have on the indigenous communities involved and the promotional role played by national or regional governmental agencies. However, limited attention has been devoted to the views and goals pursued by indigenous entrepreneurs themselves as they engage in productive activities related to serving tourists (Campelo et al.). This chapter explores the motivations of Mapuche entrepreneurs who have developed and commercialized indigenous tourism. In particular, we have observed how the Mapuche value their own culture and social encounters with people from different backgrounds. Communities and families change when they engage in this kind of tourism enterprises, which are supposed to complement traditional economic endeavours. This study was conducted in Araucanía, a region in the south of Chile, where most of the Mapuche population is located and a significant number of national and international tourists are received every year. Interviewees have showed two contrasting attitudes. Some believe that tourism can help them preserve and value their natural and cultural heritage. Others see opportunities for profit and employment, complementing traditional farm activities and allowing them to stay connected with their land. The first part of this chapter introduces ethno-tourism with a specific focus on the experiences of providers. The second part is an overview to the context of the Mapuche people in Araucanía, detailing their status in relation to national policies over the last few decades. The third section presents methodological aspects, conclusions and final remarks.
