Abstract

This work seeks to understand the health vulnerability and healthcare needs of immigrants in Chile through a qualitative exploratory study. The findings suggest that their vulnerability is due to their irregular status, insecure work, and low income, if any. Health conditions are common illnesses and mental and reproductive health issues. Acculturation and a positive attitude towards self-care are reported as protective factors. A significant barrier to access is the illegal status of some immigrants, as is a lack of familiarity with the Chilean health system. A suggestion is made to socialize health policies for migrants and expand targeted healthcare strategies.
