Abstract

We are currently facing a planetary emergency due to climate change, global warming and its effects on biodiversity, food production, human health and wellbeing, effects that add to the problems of isolation, exclusion, marginalisation, and poverty that affect many rural communities. In this context, it is relevant to highlight rural teachers as historically important social actors, recognised and respected by their communities. Therefore, their training through rural teacher internships should be linked to Environmental Education. Our objective is to highlight the importance of Environmental Education for rural teacher training. The bibliographic sources analysed allowed us to: approach to the reality of the rural world and recognise the relevance of teachers for rural communities, highlighting the importance of researching about Environmental Education linked to rural teacher training and, finally, make some proposals in this regard. Due to the complexity of teaching in rural contexts, we conclude that teaching internship for future teachers who will work in rural communities is an essential aspect of their training processes, which should emphasise Environmental Education. It is necessary that Environmental Education for the rural world acquires a leading role in the training of rural teachers.
