Characterisation and performance of the protection of epoxyphenolic coatings on tinplates
Abstract
Microstructural characterisation and performance evaluation of the protection of epoxyphenolic coatings on electrolytic tinplates were performed by optical and electron microscopy techniques. The chemical composition of the polymeric coatings and analyses of functional groups on films were determined by IR, ATR and Raman spectroscopy. Adhesion and continuity of the epoxyphenolic coatings were measured by electrolytic porosity tests. Surface defects were evident, such as pores and discontinuities, facilitating the interaction of the aggressive media with the tinplate at an interface level, including metal ion migration, all of which limited the useful life of the material for canning purposes.
