Effects of bariatric surgery on iron and calcium

Abstract

The following article is a bibliographic review. The search criteria used were: obesity, bariatric surgery, iron and calcium metabolism, micronutrient deficiencies. The Boolean expressions used were AND and OR, and the search period was set between 2010 and 2016. The objective of this review was to determine the effect of bariatric surgery on iron and calcium metabolism and their influence on anemia and bone mineral density, respectively. Results indicated that this type of surgery is the most effective in reducing obesity. However, it was concluded that there is no evi-dence concerning the support provided by a physical activity plan in the multidisciplinary work as a strategy to overcome the side effects that this surgical procedure generates.
