Rururbanization, suburbanization and farmland re-concentration: spatial effects of rural instruments in peri-urban areas of Chile

Abstract

Chile has undergone strong transformations in its rural and peri-urban space since the second half of the 20th century. Some studies analyze the spatial implications at the national and regional levels of rural instruments (laws, decrees and policies). However, no progress has been made in understanding this phenomenon at the local level. This research aims to understand the dynamics of rururbanization, suburbanization and farmland re-concentration in peri-urban areas. To do this we incorporate these concepts in the methodology and examine their temporal variation in the results. Finally, we discuss the role of the State in relation to the use of instruments in the peri-urban space and propose a model with four typologies of urban-rural communes in Chile.
