Abstract

A reactive maceral index was introduced to understand the observed anomalous behavior of coal blends durin combustion, due to the interaction among the coals comprising the blends. Parameters that affect combustion efficiency and related opacity of emissions were studied. As a conclusion it was suggested that for combustion of coal blends, averaging of traditional characteristics of coals, such as calorific value, ash and sulphur content, are insufficient to predict the opacity generated by high contents of unburnt carbon in fly ash.
