Abstract

Modern cognitive science is the outcome of a transdisciplinary effort constituting the largest body of work about the mind in human history. These advancements have guided our understanding of the functional role of the agent's body and context when producing adaptive behaviour and interactions. Thus, cognition is embodied, embedded, extended and enacted within inward- and outward-directed interactions, which is where the brain/body-in-the-world system emerges. We suggest that the goal of the new cognitive science is to understand the multi-level dynamic mechanisms underlying cognition-in-the-world and review the implications for the relationship between psychology and the social sciences. ResumenLa ciencia cognitiva es el resultado de un trabajo transdisciplinario, logrando un entendimiento sobre el operar de la mente sin precedentes en la historia humana. Estos avances han orientado nuestro estudio hacia entender el rol del cuerpo y el contexto de los agentes cognitivos en la generacion de conductas y procesos de interaccion adaptativos. Asi, la cognicion se situa, extiende y corporeiza en las interacciones dirigidas interna- y externamente donde emerge el sistema cerebro/cuerpo-en-el-mundo. Se propone que el objetivo de la nueva ciencia cognitiva es el estudio de los mecanismos dinamicos multinivel a la base del operar de la cognicion-en-el-mundo y se revisa el impacto para el estudio de la Psicologia y las Ciencias Sociales.
