Attention and Suffering: a Phenomenological Approach

Malet P.M.

Abstract

This paper proposes to interrogate the relationship between suffering and attention from a phenomenological perspective. From this analysis we will attempt to clarify the phenomenon of suffering itself. A singular phenomenon that occurs according to a particular saturation as a personal and dramatic event, and that can be experienced as imposed, irrevocable and irreversible. So, each one of these constitutive features of suffering will reveal the transformation and transmutation that it produces on our attention deployment, affecting the own relationship with ourselves, with the others and with the world. This questioning way takes its motivation from Ricceur's characterization of suffering, understood by the french philosopher as the liveliest form of self-consciousness.
