Abstract

The Ponderosa Pine has been the most successful species in the recovery process of eroded soils of the XI region. This erosion is produced by rain and the wind that blows the land that was burned in the last century within the colonization process regional, where large areas were transformed of Lenga, Ñirre, and Coihue forests, on land intended for extensive livestock farming. Based on the specie importance, the lack of updated biometric information, and the non-execution of a genetic improvement program the Forest Institute began to execute the project "Genetic and Biometric Bases of Ponderosa Pine in Aysén", financed by CORFO. This book presents the project results focused on biometric models for the species and the first steps to begin the genetic improvement program.
