Abstract
This chapter offers a brief review of the current state of the development of Natural Language Processing (NLP) in two Latin American countries: Chile and Mexico. Therefore, in recent years, both countries have focused on creating the necessary codifications to implement their own resources to understand and generate natural language. To achieve this, several actions have been implemented, such as: (i) the promotion of academic activities such as research and teaching; (ii) the creation of local technology companies, as well the installation of subsidiaries of companies such as IBM, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and others similar; and (iii) the participation of the local government with initiatives that positively impact the growth of this sector. However, despite these efforts, there are still many challenges to solve. One of them is to establish stronger links between academia and industry, since it is an incipient relationship that requires both technical and economic support, as well as answering questions about the potential of this area to generate future economic gains.
