Dynamics of developable cones under shear

Abstract

The persistent structure characterstics of the post-buckling regime of a thin cylindrical shell, subjected to axial torsion, was discussed. The thin cylindrical shell consists of a pair of developable cones joined by an S-shaped ridge. The finger pushing the surface inwards creates a pair of d cones which evolve in to an S structure when submitted to a large shear stress. The result show that the driving effect is the coupling between the deformation field around the d cones and the imposed shear field.
