CALAFATE (Berberis microphylla): A CHILEAN PATAGONIA FRUIT WITH HIGH ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY

Abstract

Polyphenols are hydroxylated aromatic compounds commonly found in diet1. These bioactive substances show antioxidant properties important for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Calafate (Berberis microphylla G. Forst) in shrub with a high content of these compounds 2,3. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the antioxidant capacity of Calafate fruit extract and in rodent plasma after Calafate consumption using chemical and cellular models. The study includes determination of metabolites in plasma after Calafate consumption.
