Abstract
Objective: To describe the changes in inspiratory muscle strength after an aerobic exercise program in older adults with controlled cardiovascular diseases improving their quality of life. Methods: The present study is a series of cases, in which an aerobic training is carried out through a forced march to 10 subjects with an age range of 65 to 75 years, with controlled cardiovascular diseases, to whom a TM6M was tested to quantify the distance traveled during the test and after the training, in order to determine the speed for training with forced march, the forced march exercise is focused on improving the Pimax. Outcome measures were evaluated with a Pressure Pimeometer, WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire and a pressure sphygmomanometer. Results: After the intervention, the subjects showed statistically significant changes only in the variable of quality of life. The Pimax pre and post intervention obtained an average of 44.4 (SD 20.75) and 52.5 (SD 17.77) P = 0.590. As for the questionnaire WHOQOL-BREF pre and post therapeutic program was 90.1 (SD 10.18) and 89 (SD 13.19) P = 0.001. The Basal PaS pre and post intervention obtained an average of 135.0 (SD 8.49) and 128.4 (SD 15.65) P = 0.169. The baseline PaD pre- and post-training presented a mean of 82 (SD 7.88) and 78.9 (SD 8.74) P = 0.349. Conclusion: An aerobic exercise-training program is effective as a therapeutic technique to improve the quality of life of older adults, since there are significant changes in the WHOQOL-BREF variable. Unlike the variables arterial pressure and maximum inspiratory pressure, they did not obtain significant changes. Keywords: older adult; aerobic exercise; inspiratory muscles.
