Assessment of the level of physical activity in patients undergoing bariatric surgery: Systematic review

Abstract

Introduction: Patients undergoing bariatric surgery present a weight decrease, originated by food malabsorption or decreased caloric intake. Such patients maintain their lifestyle prior to the intervention. The level of physical activity is important to increase the benefits of bariatric surgery and decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases and prevent the rebound effect. Objective: The objective of this review is to analyse the level of physical activity objectively in patients who received bariatric surgery. Methods: A systematic search has been performed, and 10 specific articles on the subject have been selected, following the PRISMA guidelines. Results: Mainly, the studies based on patients who received bariatric surgery are performed with self-appraisal subjective tools. In this review, 10 scientific articles have been selected, in such studies; an accelerometer has been used as objective method to measure the physical activity developed by the patients. Conclusions: Patients undergoing bariatric surgery increase or maintain their sedentary lifestyle and behaviours, which do not match with its own perception of physical activity they claim. It is important to assess not only sedentary behaviour, also the activity of sedentary lifestyle that is more prevalent, has to be considered. A whole perspective has to be considered to establish intervention strategies against this sedentary behaviour, thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases and avoid the rebound effect.
