Effect of lingual strength in oral biomechanic
Keywords: strength, tongue, IOPI
Abstract
Objective: To search for scientific evidence on the use of IOPI as a research tool in subjects with neurological diseases. Method: A systematic search was performed based on the combinations of the terms related to the objective of the research in PubMed, MEDLINE, LILACS, WEB of SCIENCE and MedCarib databases. Repeated articles were excluded and those that did not have relation with the selection criteria as (1) to present IOPI use as instrumental device; (2) include assessment or training of lingual strength; (3) be written in English, Spanish or Portuguese, (3) consider subjects with neurological diseases defined in search terms; (4) is available online. Results: In the initial research, 143 studies were obtained and, after the analysis, 14 were included in the final review and received the analysis with the PEDro Scale. The analysis of articles showed that IOPI was used in 64% of the studies as a tool for evaluation of the lingual force and only in 36% as an element of therapeutic training. It was observed a great heterogeneity among the studies, as well as a small number of subjects. However, there was evidence of a positive effect in the evaluation and therapeutic use of IOPI in 70% of neurological patients. Conclusion: There is still limited evidence of the effects of IOPI use as a research tool in subjects with neurological diseases. The use is mainly as a tool for evaluation than for strength training and lingual resistance in this type of subjects. More scientific evidence should be sought.
