Implications of Cuboid facet of Navicular bone in biomechanics of the Midtarsal foot in contemporary Spanish collections. Preliminary results

Abstract
The cuboid facet of the navicular, localized next to the third cuneiform surface, is described by the literature as an “occasionally find”. However, until this date, there is not a biomechanical explanation about the presence or absence of this facet in contemporary skeletal remains and neither current statistical data that allow approaching a new focus of this study. Taking in consideration the above, we analyzed 267 pairs of navicular bones from documented collections from Spain (Granada, Barcelona and Madrid) through morphoscopical and morphometrical methods, emphasizing in its presence and the implications in the modern gait. Summarizing our results, we found similar quantities between individuals with and without surface, replying alike information comparing populations and sexes. By means of morphometrical methods, we did not find a relationship between the proportions of the navicular bone and the presence of the cuboid facet. According to the latest research, we included new approaches in our study of the midtarsal analysis through cinematoradiography in the gait; and new measurements in both the talus and cuboid to check if the cuboid facet has a relationship with the position of the navicular.
