Attitudes towards probability and its teaching: an exploratory study with preservice and inservice mathematics teachers from chile

Keywords: Attitudes, probability, teacher training, statistical education, curriculum

Abstract

In this paper we analyse the results of a scale of attitudes toward probability and its teaching of a sample of 70 mathematics teachers and 51 training. The attitude is generally positive among these teachers, although it is slightly better among those teachers which have teaching experience. We didn´t find any difference by gender or place of work. However, it becomes evident that mathematics teachers value the usefulness and relevance of probability on a professional level as well as on a personal level. This research suggests the need for investigating a didactic strategy which fosters the improvement of attitudes towards this subject.
